The claim that ghosts are all around us has been in the popular mind set since the earliest of time. Folklore was littered with stories of apparitions and spectral beings. Ancient seers called upon the spirits to help them foretell the future and by the 1st century A.D., historians were beginning to write down popular ghostly tales and legends. Almost all civilizations believe that there is a life after death and that the soul transcends the body and moves on.
Two thousand years later, the question still remains. “Do ghosts really exist?”

There have been too many reported sights of apparitions and spectres for such a question to be brushed aside and ignored. Something is going on and it is up to the scientists and paranormal investigators to try and solve the longest running riddle in human history. But before we can start to set the world of the paranormal right, we have to learn some of the basic terminology.

Supernatural:
A lot of researchers and theorists of spirit sightings have taken a dislike of the word “Supernatural”, I am not sure why, maybe it is because the term seems to conjure up imagery of bad B movies.
The word Supernatural, broken down into its original meaning, is, in my opinion, a perfectly good word to use that has a very clear meaning: “existing or occurring through some agency beyond the known forces of nature”. The word comes from the Latin super, meaning “above”, and natura meaning “nature”. Put simply, it’s beyond anything we know or currently understand.

The study of ghosts is quite a quirky and questionable subject to begin with. And for investigators wanting to be taken seriously they may want to avoid the word, supernatural, when talking in, or to the, public as some see it as carrying too many divine or even satanic connotations, so many investigators prefer to use the word: paranormal.

Paranormal:
The word paranormal is one that is used on nearly every website to do with ghosts, UFOs and many other pseudoscience topics. Dictionary.com defines the word paranormal with the following:
“of or pertaining to the claimed occurrence of an event or perception without scientific explanation, as psychokinesis, extrasensory perception, or other purportedly supernatural phenomena.”
So the word paranormal can be used to fit many topics that are without scientific explanation, but is it the best word to describe what we do? Is it too broad or do we need to use a more fitting word?
For me, the word paranormal makes me think of Russian Telepathy or Psychokinesis experiments that were taking place in the 60′s. What does it make you think of?

Ghosts & Apparitions:
The word ghost, as used by most people, is the visual appearance of a deceased human being’s spirit, soul or life force. In more general terms, an apparition is the visual appearance of any spirit phenomenon. Laypeople use the words interchangeably whereas lots of paranormal investigators prefer to use the word apparition as to some the term ghost is only one form of apparition.
Think of it this way, if you will: all ghosts are apparitions but not all apparitions are ghosts.

For those of you interested in the definitions of both ghosts and apparitions, then look no further.
Apparition: “a supernatural appearance of a person or thing, esp. a ghost; a spectre or phantom; wraith: a ghostly apparition at midnight.”
Ghost: “the soul of a dead person, a disembodied spirit imagined, usually as a vague, shadowy or evanescent form, as wandering among or haunting living persons.”

Just to add a little confusion, here are a few more synonyms for an apparition, though all are used to describe ghosts:

Nightshade
Phantasm
Phantom
Shade
Spectre or spectre
spook
Vision
Wraith

Now most people on the street do not normally make this distinction but to avoid confusion as to what claims are actually being made, lots of investigators believe that it’s best just to stick to the word “apparition” unless you specifically mean a ghost.

That is amazing. I love this style you have! I love how many of your works take the form of something innocent (such as a child) and show it through a dark lens. As people we always assume some things are inherently and naturally good or innocent or pure (such as children) but of course this is not the case. There always seems to be a layer underneath it all that many people miss, out of blindness and ignorance. Ok, I am rambling now too much and inserting too much of my own philosophy haha

Basically, this picture makes me smile :)

Interesting! Looks like some kind of child. They always do seem to make things creepier, eh? So, I'm just curious, was it a black canvas you dabbed at with white pain on cotton? Is that the right technique? But yeah, I can see that it sure does make wonderfully spooky art.

Want to hear a REAL ghost type story? It's kinda long....

You have to understand the background a little. My mother is deaf, so were all her brothers and sisters, my cousins, (their children) and her parents.

We went up to Baltimore to spend a week visiting and had gone to bed. My sister and I, and my 2 girl cousins shared a room with 4 bunk beds. I SWEAR I had not fallen asleep yet, when Marcia (my cousin) climbed down the bunk bed above me and began talking to me in sign language. (Not once did I question how I could see her in the dark) She told me to tell her parents that she loved them and that she would miss them very much. Suddenly, I noticed she had no hands! Yet I was able to understand everything she was saying. I was 10 years old. I was just about to scream when something fell from the bed above me and landed on the floor, waking up my sister who DID start screaming.

My dad came running into the room, followed by my mother and my aunt and uncle. There was Marcia, laying on the floor having what I called a "fit."

An ambulance was called, she was taken to the hospital, where she died. It turned out she had a brain aneurysm.

I never told her parents what I saw, nor did I tell mine until many years later out of fear they wouldn't believe me. Even then my parents told me I was just dreaming.

Me? I'm not so sure....

I love your image. What you are able to do with cotton is just amazing to me. You are quite talented you know!

To be honest, I had a hard time living with it for a while. Just because I KNEW I wasn't sleeping. I was afraid to sleep, afraid she'd come back in my dreams, for a while I felt like it was my fault. But I eventually came to terms with it I guess. I've had other "pre-death" experiences since then, guess I've got a knack for it. lol

Wonderful yet again! I love that you're making that cotton worthwhile :XD:

A little story to go with the description too, a family friend's youngest son was video taping shit with one of his mates when they were home alone, and when his mum got home they were completely white and kept saying they couldn't sleep in the house and had to leave. When they watched the video back over you can see the dark form of a person with a white shirt walk back and forth behind them about three or four times. The kid was so scared he stayed at his dad's for a few weeks before they talked him into going home. Also, his mum's brother died in their house a few years before it happened.

Same here! The guy who owned our house before we bought it electrocuted himself to death. I call him Caspar :D My dad and brother went away last week, and I heard someone hit the door going from the passageway into the kitchen, running footsteps, and then heard the pantry door slam. So here's me and my mum in the kitchen at one am with torches and screwdrivers kicking open the pantry door because the key on it was actually swinging... :unimpressed:

Once upon a time he only used to walk past my bedroom door, now he's turning lights on and off and opening doors and everything. This morning I went out to the kitchen to get coffee and my mum went "You and that fucking ghost of yours!" :iconblankstareplz: "He's been opening that damn back door and freezing the hell out of me all morning!" And as if on cue the back door just creaked open :XD: and I was like "Well he's not MINE, he just... follows me around sometimes..."

Yeah people think, well, movies are to blame, that "ghosts" or whatever you want to call it are evil or want to make bad things to you, but is not true, sometimes is just... all you wrote. Me and my girl used to joke about it, because sometimes, things just disappear, i mean, books, clothes... but i had some real shit-in-my-pants experiences. The best thing is not to feel fear, so hard sometimes but it works.

Haha, that's awesome! Maybe that's where all the missing socks in the world go :paranoid: Lmao. The only time I got scared was when I was really little, and then just recently when he started making his presence known, like with the door, because I thought there was actually someone in the house  But I'm not scared of him, we've come to an agreement; I don't bother him, if he doesn't bother me. And he can mess around with the lights and doors all he wants :XD:

This is amazing~!

The use of cotton really makes the edges soft and hazy the same way I would imagine an incorporeal being to be. Its like a haunting aura that took the form of a person with cold eyes that chill me to the bone.

This is really amazing. Your techniques are so cool.
